The film takes place in the near future and follows Teresa (Barbara Colen), who arrives at her home in Bacurau, a town in the semi-arid region of Brazil, to attend her grandmother’s funeral. When she arrives, Teresa immediately notices signs that Bacurau is having a hard time.

Basic services are lacking, mobile phone coverage is fading, the drinking water supply is dammed, and the truck carrying the drinking water fills with bullet holes. It soon becomes clear that the corrupt government has completely abandoned the village: not only has Bacurau been literally wiped off the map, but its citizens are under attack. As those responsible draw closer, the villagers must prepare for an organized resistance to avoid further damage.
